Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com issued a public letter on Sunday addressing its delivery riders, accusing an unnamed rival — widely believed to be Meituan — of reviving the controversial “pick one” practice, where part-time couriers are allegedly forced to choose between platforms or risk being blacklisted.
JD said the tactic has led to a 16–25% decline in rider income, and unveiled emergency measures including job priority for riders’ spouses, increased recruitment, and a policy ensuring no forced exclusivity. The company also pledged to provide free orders for any delivery delayed over 20 minutes, following recent service disruptions. The strongly worded letter criticized what it described as systematic mistreatment of delivery workers in the industry, including safety concerns, lack of social insurance, and the rise of under qualified only-for-take-out kitchens.
